VW Aborts Turkey Factory Plans due to COVID-19

Merhaba! I am Shun Yoshida from Tokyo Consulting Firm Turkey Office.

I shared about “Latest Update on VERBİS System Registration” last week.

This week I would like to mention information on “Abort of VW’s Turkey Factory Plans due to COVID-19“.

On July 1st, Volkswagen (hereinafter referred as VW), one of the biggest German automakers, announced official suspension for building a new car factory in Turkey due to the widespread of COVID-19. VW was planning to manufacture the new car plant in Manisa close to İzmir on the western coast of Turkey. The aforesaid project has been put on ice in the wake of international criticism about Turkey’s military operations in North-Eastern Syria, so-called “Operation Peace Spring”. Turkey factory was supposed to expect an annual production capacity of 300,000 units with investing 1.3 billion Euro.

Mr. Christoph Ludewig, VW spokesman, explained the reason for the abort as follows.

“The background is that the coronavirus pandemic has had an impact on car markets and the situation is a different one from pre-corona.”

That is all for this week.

We also offer free-of-charge meeting(online/offline) regarding establishment and business development in Turkey.

If you have any question other than the above, please feel free to contact us.

Thank you very much for your time read until the end.
